Purchasing A Pre-owned Saxophone – Tips To Make The Right Decision


A brand new or a pre-owned alto saxophone – no matter which is you decide to buy, it is important to pay for a gear that has got all the technicalities right and can be played appropriately. Don't grab an used one by getting attracted just by it's low price. Even if it costs less, take some time out to check the instrument and then, dedicate your cash for it (obviously, if you find worth it).


Ask the seller the following questions. Never hesitate doing so.

  • Is the instrument in good playing condition?
  • When was the last time the instrument taken for servicing?
  • How well does it play in tune?
  • Does the saxophone have original finish?
  • Was it damaged previously?
  • If it was damaged earlier, what kind of damage was it? (If there are acute damages in the neck, don't consider buying it.)
  • What is the colour and appearance of the instrument? (An old silver-plated saxophone will appear a bit blackened; a thorough cleaning process will improve it's appearance.)

You can know about the tuning ability and playing condition of the saxophone by testing it yourself. Take mouthpiece, tuner, reeds and neck strap to play the instrument. If you are satisfied with the condition of the gear, you can buy it for sure.  

In short, when you are buying a pre-owned or used alto saxophone, you should have a well-maintained one that is in perfect playing condition. To maintain and care for it properly further, you need an alto saxophone bag.
