A brand new or a pre-owned alto saxophone – no matter which is you decide to buy, it is important to pay for a gear that has got all the technicalities right and can be played appropriately. Don't grab an used one by getting attracted just by it's low price. Even if it costs less, take some time out to check the instrument and then, dedicate your cash for it (obviously, if you find worth it). Ask the seller the following questions. Never hesitate doing so. Is the instrument in good playing condition? When was the last time the instrument taken for servicing? How well does it play in tune?
